Clone Wars Cover

This is the last of my work on the Clone Wars series. Its the cover for issue 12, and my first crack at inking my own comics work.

THOR

This just started out as a warm up sketch, but I liked how it turned out and desided to follow through with it. Thor, has always been one of my favorite heavy hitters. Giant hammer, controls lightning, kickass mullet. This is more or less what I thought I looked like when I was 13 and took the garbage out with my shirt off.

This is the first of a 3 page sample Ive started. My intent is to get 6-8 new portfolio pages finished for the Toronto Comic Con at the end of the month. Not sure how realistic that is with the other work I've got to finish up before then but I'll definitely post everything here as I go along.

This is a little warm up for the day. Im starting some new samples this week, and buffy being a favorite of mine will be the subject of several of them.

Darkstalkers tribute book

Hard to believe its been a year since the 25th anniversary Street Fighter Tribute book was put together by Udon. But here we are 2009, and its the 15th anniversary of Capcom's Darkstalkers, so Udon is doing it again with another great tribute book. This is my pic, obviously, of Morgan. Pretty straightforward, but i'm still learning with my colours, so i felt it best to do something simple that I could be confident in finishing.

MOCCA 2009

So, here it is: the cover art to my long awaited (since earlier this week, when I told everyone I was doing it) sketchbook. It's a whopping 36 pages, plus cover, and, so that Cameron can still feel needed, I've included one typo. The book is filled with concept work for The Port, and has a 12-page excerpt of the comic to whet fans' appetites.

MOCCA

Me and some of the TX crew will be setting up shop at the MOCCA convention in NYC this coming weekend, June 6th and 7th. This is one of the coolest shows of the year, and june in New York is always a good idea. This time around I've managed to get my act together and made me up a sketch book, and this new print, based on my web comic The Port.

Sandman Returns

This is a resent commission I did. Thanks to Edward for sending me the jpg. For anyone interested I will do commissions of characters other than Sandman.

TCAF

Its TCAF time again. The Toronto Comic Arts Festival, is back this coming weekend at the Toronto Reference Library on yonge st north of bloor.
TX Comics is there again, in force. One of the surprises we have this year are 6'x3' banners featuring our webcomics. This is my banner art, big thanks to Ramon Perez who put this together for me and used some of his colour magic. It turned out so good that I'm gunna use this colour palette for any colourized Port art I do.

Hulk Angry, in Colour

Here's the colour version of the hulk sketch i did awhile ago. I'll be selling prints of this at the Calgary Con this weekend, so if your in the area come see my table at G20, in the Round Up Centre.

Teens

These are some character designs i did a little while ago, for a project with my friend mike roberts(check out his link in my side bar). Its still under wraps and these prolly won't be the final designs but I like how they turned out.

Clone Wars 8

I got another chance to do the cover art for issue 8 of Clone Wars. It doesn't come out till the summer but it should be in previews soon so I think it's safe to show here. I've also posted the colour mock-up I did.

Clone Cover

This is the cover for issue 4 of Clone Wars. Ive been drawing CW for awhile now, but this was the first cover they let me do. I ended up having to revise Obi Wan's head to be less beat up looking but I prefer this original version better.

I did this cartoony hulk sketch last week as a warm up for a day of star wars pages. I think ill try and finish it in colour in the next week or so.

Calgary Con

I was lucky enough to get invited out to the Calgary Comics Expo this year. Big thanks to Kendrix for giving me the nod.
This is my contribution to the western themed collection they put together every year.

This is from a few months back now obviously. It was black and white line art that I gave to nicole on the day but here's the quick colour test I did.

Supergirl

This is a drawing of Supergirl that i drew. Sometimes blog posts are self-explanatory.

Wonder Woman

This is how awesome it is to be me. I did this blueline sketch of Wonder Woman a few weeks back, and thought it a pretty good start, if I do say so myself. So I left it out on my desk, as I do when I'm seeking approval from my fellow studio mates, and when I return to work the next day, friend and superstar artist Cameron Stewart has light-boxed and inked the piece, just cuz he thought it would be cool.
Somewhere in the multi-verse, there is an alternate time-line Scott Hepburn, who commutes into the big city to climb the ladder as a system analyst, and thinks back to a time when all he wanted was to draw comics. Thank god this Scott Hepburn, failed grade 10 math. Things could have gone horribly wrong.

Street Fighter Tribute

Udon's tribute book, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Streetfighter, came out this past week at Comic Con 2008. The book features dozens of top flight artist from around the world like Adam Hughes, Cheeks, J. Scott Campbell, and my fellow studiomates Cameran Stewart, and Kalman Andrasofszky. I also got to do a piece for the collection, Which was great and terrifying, considering I,ve never really coloured anything before this. So I kept it simple and, with the help of the guys here, I think it turned out alright. After seeing some the other more stylize versions of the street fighter characters, I wish i had tried something more cartoony, but all in all Im happy with the results.

Zangief Endings

Last summer I got to do some of the art for Udons revamp of Street Fighter II Turbo for download on the Xbox 360. Whats even better is I got the big man himself, Zangief. Bear wrestling and beards, what more could you ask for?

Stalking

This art for a Dark Stalkers card game that i did through Udon Entertainment last fall. Capcoms best kept secret, Dark Stalkers is the gothic step brother of the Street Fighter franchise. It never got the recognition that SF did but with its 15th anniversary coming up next year, maybe its time for a resurrection.

Nelson

One of the many perks of sharing a studio with other working artists, is getting contacts with clients and work you would have otherwise never of been exposed to. Like this job for Nelson publishing. The page is going to be part of an illustrated dictionary targeting 8-13 year olds.
Again, the inking was laborious, but drawing animals is always fun.

Hulk

I did this Hulk image for the upcoming Paradise Toronto Comic Con. This was good chance to work on my colouring skills, modest as they are. Mine is one of, I think 8-9 hulk images used for the badges this year. The show is July 12-13 at the metro convention centre. The TX gang will be there again this year ,so come down if your in the Toronto area this summer.

And this piece was done for a White Wolf monster manual. I think the bg is pretty sloppy, but i had fun with the pirate character. My inking is also kinda weak but all in all I still like this pic.

Vector #4

Issue #28 of Knights of the Old Republic came out today, marking the end of my run on the book. So I guess its safe to show some pencils from the issue.

grossology 2

This is another round of design i did for grossology last year. I think the work is a clear influence on my TX Comics series, The Port. the chucky shapes and broken perspective make everything look solid and based in reality but simplified and definitly funner to draw.

grossology

I worked on an animated series last year called grossology, for Nelvana as a location designer. The day to day worker bee feeling of being in a big studio got old pretty quick, but the people i met were great and it gave me the motivation to get back to my focus as a comics illustrator.
The original designers of the series, Nick Sung and Daniela Strijleva based the look of the series on the work of Saul Bass. They were a real source of inspiration for me in my time on the show. Daniela espiecally taught me a lot about composition and design and maybe more importantly showed me that, for our own sake as artists, to take pride in the work we do. Even under less than ideal circumstances.

Where I left off

I'm just gunna jump back in here and hope to make the blog post habit stick this time. The project i started when i last posted was Knights of the old Republic issues 25-28, which are part of the Vector crossover story published by Dark Horse. So i guess thats a good place to start today with some of my pencils from the series.


This 2 page spread was the reveal of sith lord Karness Muur and his evil talisman during a jedi vision in issue 25.

One last image for today. This was a commission i did last fall of the Sandman. It was a lot of fun drawing out of my comfort zone and inking is always a challenge for me so having a reason to ink something other than the Port is good for my art skills health meter.

Birthday Doodle

Its birthday drawing time again , so here's this years installment. Ive cleverly used my online comic "the port" as a back drop for teenage Nicole and her love of cats. It must be hard for all the girls whose boyfriends dont think they deserve lovingly crafted drawing on their birthday.

TCAF

Its the Toronto Comics Arts Festival this weekend and everyone here at the studio is going all out with the displays and what not. So tell your friends to bring their families to the Victoria College building at U of T this Saturday and Sunday(august 18th and 19th).
Heres a little preview of some new Port art ill have up, and a pin up of Magik just for kicks.

con season

It seems like going to comic conventions is a full time job in the summer, but im trying to get some drawing time squeezed in when i can. Here's some stuff ive done lately. The first is a cleaned up girl friday sketch i did for www.horhaus.com a few weeks back and the others are for an up coming exalted manual.

i was playing around with some blue beetle drawings. i like the black and blue patterns especially on the face but after drawing it a few times id prolly want to streamline the scarab backpack.

catwoman meets poison ivy

just home from nyc and the comic con this weekend. i drove down with my new studio mates and some frineds in a supersized budget van. took us 14 hrs or so to get there all said and done but with some super nerd toys like ds game boy and a laptop for movies (watched the host, which is awesome) it was a pretty fun ride.
i wrapped up these 2 pages just before leaving thurday morning. i did a couple small revisions that arent on these scans but its more or less the same.

This is the first page finished of the sample portfolio im putting together for the new york con this month. its not accually the first page of the sequence, but i had some trouble getting loose with my first page and moved on to the second before i could do too much damage. ill get to it eventually , and the clock is running out , so it'll have to be soon. wish me luck.

ive been workin' hard lately on getting some new samples together for the new york con in feb. so most of my spare time is focused on that. nothing accually finished yet but i'll post the pages as i get them done. in the mean time heres some warm up spidey doodles and the ol' tyimer is a bg character from the sample pages.

































i drew grievous, here, for my little cousins at christmas. i didnt have time to get a copy before giving them the original so all i have is this rough.

NYNY - streetfighter pics

i just got back from a long weekend in new york city. it was great . i saw lance armstrong running the marathon. i went to a concert in dumbo, which is an awesome neighbourhood in brooklyn on the waterfront. had a lively conversation about how juliani is a doucebag with the ladys behind the counter at manginaro's. saw a real live broadway show, the drousy chaperone. im not usually a musical theatre kinda guy but you gotta support canadian, and it turns out thats its quite funny.
going to new york always makes think about moving there. im not sure about the legality of just moving to another country on a whim but im looking into it.


it was an eight hour drive which isnt bad espiecally with some company to share drive time and help keep you awake, or if youre nicole to just look cute and fall asleep.

female characters

im back a week late and a buck short, but ill try and make up for it with extra drawings. lately ive been trying to work on getting more comfortable drawing female characters. its a bit of a hole in my portfolio right now, that i hope to correct.
these are mostly drawings ive done to loosen up before getting down to business at my day job (ive been working at an animation studio doing location design).





the grass always looks greener in other departments. ive never worked as a character designer but ive always wanted to try it. unfortunately once you start your career in one direction you tend to get type cast. not that i dont enjoy location design, id just like to spread my wings alittle. so the above pic is an attempt at a portrait of one of my new studio mates , perry. who was to one who motivated to start this blog in the first place.



and this last illustration is one of a handful of pics i did last week. ive tried to keep myself working as an illustrator after hours. the extra money helps but mostly i dont want to lose the momentum i felt i had going this last year drawing comic books.

hello interweb. thank you for accepting me to your blogging club. im excited to get things rolling here, so ill keep this brief for tonight. my plan for this ride on the art blog band wagon is the same as everyones. to show my drawings and ideas to anyone interested , to get some feedback and hopefully alittle helpful criticism, and to keep myself motivated.
to get started ive posted a handful of pics from my portfolio and sketchbook. the dr strange piece was done with the blog in mind but the rest are just odds and ends. most are work ive done in the last 6 months to a year.
i ll try and post at least once a week, so check back in soon, or dont,... whatever.......please come back.
